How Military Time Works
Understanding the 24-hour clock: what it is, how to read it, and how to convert between standard and military time formats.
What Is Military Time?
- 24-Hour Cycle: Runs from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 (11:59 PM) without AM or PM.
- 4 Digits, No Colon: Formatted continuously as 4 numbers (e.g., 1430 = 2:30 PM).
- Error Prevention: Eliminates AM/PM ambiguity in military, aviation, and medical scheduling.
- Global Standard: Governed by ISO 8601; matches UTC and Zulu time notation.
Convert Standard Time to Military Time
Apply these 4 conversion rules based on the time period:
AM Hours (1:00–9:59 AM)
Remove the colon and add a leading zero for single-digit hours. 9:30 AM → 0930. Hours 10:00–11:59 AM already have 2 digits: 10:15 AM → 1015.
Noon (12:00–12:59 PM)
Keep 12 as the hour and remove the colon. 12:00 PM → 1200. 12:45 PM → 1245.
PM Hours (1:00–11:59 PM)
Add 12 to the hour and remove the colon. 1:00 PM → 1300 (1 + 12 = 13). 6:30 PM → 1830 (6 + 12 = 18).
Midnight (12:00 AM)
12:00 AM becomes 0000 (start of day) or 2400 (end of day). 12:30 AM → 0030.
Convert Military Time to Standard Time
Check the first 2 digits (the hour) and apply the matching rule:
Set hour to 12, mark AM.
0000 = 12:00 AM (midnight).
0030 = 12:30 AM.
Keep the hour, mark AM.
0930 = 9:30 AM.
0715 = 7:15 AM.
Keep 12, mark PM.
1200 = 12:00 PM (noon).
1245 = 12:45 PM.
Subtract 12, mark PM.
1700 = 17 − 12 = 5:00 PM.
2100 = 21 − 12 = 9:00 PM.
Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers to the most-searched military time conversion questions.
Subtract 12 from any hour above 12 and add PM; keep hours 01–11 and add AM. For hour 00, use 12 AM. For hour 12, use 12 PM. Minutes stay the same in both the 24-hour clock and the 12-hour clock formats.
0000 hours equals 12:00 AM midnight — the start of a new day on the 24-hour clock.
1200 hours equals 12:00 PM noon — the midpoint of the 24-hour cycle where the 12-hour clock and 24-hour clock share the same hour number.
1700 hours equals 5:00 PM. Calculation: 17 − 12 = 5 PM. This is a common end-of-workday time on the 24-hour clock.
The military uses the 24-hour clock to prevent AM/PM confusion in operations that span day and night across international time zones. A single misread time during combat coordination, aviation scheduling, or medical dosing can cause serious consequences. NATO, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), and Zulu time all follow 24-hour timekeeping for the same reason.
Yes, 2400 is valid and represents 12:00 AM midnight at the end of a day. 0000 represents midnight at the start of a new day. Both refer to the same clock position (00:00) from different perspectives — 2400 closes one day, 0000 opens the next.
Military time and the 24-hour clock are essentially the same system — both count hours from 0 to 23. The key difference is formatting: military time omits the colon (1430 instead of 14:30) and is often spoken with the word "hours" (e.g., "fourteen hundred hours"). The 24-hour clock as used internationally by ISO 8601 includes a colon (14:30). Both systems eliminate AM/PM confusion.
